Book suggestions - take 2 ;-)

Posted by kiwiria on 2007.07.31 at 08:17
I've only had one suggestion for a book to read, so I'll hold off posting the poll for another week, hoping more suggestions will pop up... otherwise it'll be a pretty boring poll! ;-)

On Monday I hope to post a poll to choose the next book, so if you have any suggestions for books you'd like included in the poll, please post them! Either as comments to this post, or as separate posts (but then please tag them 'suggestions', so I know where to find them ;-) ).

Have a great weekend, I'm off to Berlin! :-D

A suggestion

Posted by kiwiria on 2007.07.11 at 11:36
I wanted as many people as possible to have a say before making decisions of any kind. My main goal for this community is that it is active and a place for discussing books rather than just another place with posts like "I've just read xxx and it's really good, you should read it too!" There's nothing wrong with writing that *in* a post, as long as that's not the sole purpose of the post - there are other communities for that :)

So here are my suggestions - let me hear what you think (or think what you hear as I wrote first).
* We use two months per book rather than just one.
* So-called 'off-topic posts' (i.e. posts still about books, but just not about 'the book of the month') are not only welcome, but encouraged.
However, posts about books other than 'the book of the month' should include spoiler-warnings where necessary.

Hopefully this way we'll have a bit more activity! :-D

Thoughts?

Need opinons

Posted by kiwiria on 2007.07.02 at 09:48
This community has been very quiet lately, and I'm wondering if there's anything we can do to change that? I love reading and discussing books, but it seems as if we're perhaps all too busy to fully participate? Is one month per book too short a time, and we should increase it to two? Or is it too long, and we should have more books a month?

I'd love to hear your opinions on the matter. How can we improve this community and make it more active? What were your expectations of the community and are they being met?

Are you interested in continuing on, or was this a nice experiment that unfortunately didn't pan out? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Personally I'm interested in continuing, but I'd like to know if you are too :)

The eternal debate...

Posted by kiwiria on 2007.06.25 at 10:29
*waves to dichroic who'll know what I'm referring to ;) *

I've had internet discussions about The Blue Castle, and there's one thing we never seem to be able to agree on, so I have to ask it here....

After Barney and Valancy got married, did they, or didn't they?

Did what?Collapse )

The Blue Castle

Hi all :-)

We're finally past the 15th, so I get to post! "The Blue Castle" is my very favourite LMM book, and one of my favourite books in general, so I love talking about it. I already have heaps of ideas for posts, but will try not to overwhelm anybody ;-)

Here are some questions to get us started:

1. Was Valancy depressed at the beginning of the story? What was she feeling? Do you think LMM ever felt like Valancy?
2. What were the strengths that let Valancy break out in the end? Would she have been able to do it without that jolt of expecting to die?
3. How do you define self esteem? Who has most self-esteem in this story, Barney or Valancy?
4. At the end, Valancy seems to go back to her former cowed state. What do you think would have happened if Barney *had* stormed off and never come back?
5. What do you think LMM was trying to write about in TBC? Love, beauty,or some other quality? Why?
6. What is your favorite symbol in TBC and how does it enhance your appreciation of the story?

My answers behind the cutCollapse )

Our book for June..

Posted by kiwiria on 2007.06.01 at 10:42
Our book for June is "The Blue Castle"!

I'm stoked that this book won. It's one of my favourites and I know from experience that there are a lot of things to discuss in it.

See you on the 15th :-)

Book for June

Posted by kiwiria on 2007.05.30 at 10:10
Most people seemed to prefer us picking a new book for June, so I've made a new poll, but included "Possession" again, so feel free to vote for that one again. And of course, even if we pick another book for June, you're always more than welcome to post your thoughts on previous books, no matter how much time has passed.

As a change, I've also included a question of which book you'd most like NOT to read. If you don't care much one way or another, just leave it blank, but if a lot of people really don't want to read a certain book, we should perhaps consider not taking that one. Of course they can just lurk that month, but it's nicer to have a lot of people participating.

These last two months have been 'heavy' books and quiet months, so perhaps we're ready for something more light-hearted this month? But of course, your votes are ALL up to you :-)

Book for June?

Posted by kiwiria on 2007.05.29 at 08:30
Since there have been no posts at all about Possession, I was wondering if we should keep it for June as well? It really depends on why there have been no posts. I simply haven't had the time to finish it, and if it's the same for others, it would give us a chance to discuss it. If - on the other hand - people have finished it, but there's just nothing to write about, then let's definitely pick another one!

What do you all think?

Book for May

Posted by kiwiria on 2007.05.07 at 15:55
Sorry I'm late people! I've been really busy lately, and somehow it slipped my mind that I never posted the result of the poll. If anybody wants to help me moderate this community I'd be very interested in volunteers :-D

Anyway the book for May is "Possession: A Romance" by A. S. Byatt!! Happy reading everybody :-)
